GENEVA - The World Health Organization on Tuesday reported 34 new polio cases in Indonesia, bringing the country's known total to 100. One of the new cases was confirmed on Sumatra, which until last week was polio-free.
Oliver Rosenbauer, spokesman for the WHO polio eradication program, explained that the cases reported last week on Sumatra and in Central Java were more serious because they indicated that the disease had jumped islands. An emergency campaign to curb the disease involved vaccinating some 6.5 million children in West Java, where the first case was found in April, and in neighboring Jakarta and Banten.
A separate campaign three days earlier had targeted 78,000 children under age 5 in Central Java. Another immunization drive is being planned for Sumatra.
