JAKARTA - The polio cases in Indonesia is expected to rise from the current number of 46, since many children have not got polio vaccination, a spokesperson of the World Health Organization (WHO) said in Jakarta Thursday. "The increase of polio cases is possible, because the level of vaccination is low in the areas where the polio cases were confirmed," spokesperson of the WHO's Indonesian branch Sari Setiogi told Xinhua.
Seven new cases were found recently in Indonesia, putting the total number to 46, she added. Two of the seven cases were detected in West Java Province, where the original outbreak was detected, said the spokesperson, adding that the rest five were found in Bogor Province and the Lebak region in Banten Province near Jakarta. All these areas were in the western part of Indonesia's Java Island.
The Indonesian government waged a massive polio vaccination drive for over 6 million children late April, in the wake of re- emerging of the disease in Sukabumi region in March. Indonesia was once declared polio-free in 1995.
