Judges in Corby trial likely to dismiss letter as evidence DENPASAR - While Australian-based lawyers have welcomed the Federal Government's letter, its contents appear to have disappointed Schapelle Corby's Indonesian legal team. And the prosecutor in the case is also unimpressed. Ida Bagus Wiswantanu says it's a pointless move and that the material comes too late to be tested in the trial process or to be considered as evidence.

"It's hard to know what the judges in the Corby case are likely to make of the letter, which will be part of a dossier of material to be handed to them by her defence team today." according to Tim Palmer. But if the chief prosecutor in the case, Ida Bagus Wiswantanu, is any guide it won't be much at all.

"After the hearing is closed," he told the ABC, "it's impossible to present more evidence." "If it were to be submitted now it would have no value at all, according to Indonesian law," he said.

" The judges in the case had already agreed to read material from the defence team, so long as it was submitted by today. But on the last day of the hearing, chief judge Linton Sirait made it quite clear he wouldn't consider any material at all about events at Sydney or Brisbane airport. And that's what this letter deals with."

It's addressed not to the judges but to Schapelle Corby's lawyer, Lily Lubis, and it's signed by a First Assistant Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Rod Smith. It spells out that baggage handlers are suspected of a role in drug trafficking through Sydney's International Airport, and that those baggage handlers worked on the 8th of October last year, the date on which Schapelle Corby flew to Bali. And that's about it.

Schapelle Corby's legal team in Bali had been so encouraged by comments from Prime Minister John Howard that the Government was writing something that for most of yesterday they expected another stronger letter to arrive. It didn't. But it's remarkable enough that anything of this nature can be submitted at all so late in the day, without being tested in court and without the prosecution even seeing it.

And the provision of the letter by the Government is another backhander for Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty, who last week volunteered that the smuggling operation at Sydney's International Airport had no connection at all to the Corby case.

Yesterday, Opposition leader Kim Beazley became the latest to criticise the commissioner for those remarks, saying Mr Keelty had been unwise to comment on the case. But then, at the same time, Mr Beazley felt quite free to volunteer that Schapelle Corby was innocent, saying he sincerely hoped she'd be acquitted.

The political will not to be seen to be doing nothing in this case is closely tracking public opinion, but it's hard to see what effect it will all have on the judges who are writing the verdict to be delivered on Friday week.

Bali Nine linked to major drug syndicate

Will the Indonesian government really take action against the syndicate(s) which have probably been active in Indonesia for quite some time? I can only hope they will.

The nine Australians arrested earlier will probably be charged with things that carry the death penalty, but extradiction is another issue...

How on earth did she think she could bring this bag to Bali? Maybe her boyfriend gave her a 'pillow'?? Damn... pretty stupid if you ask me. Any doubt that she has been tricked is gone with me now. Of course I'm still an outside, but hey.. look at the size of that bag... Emoticon: Laugh out loud

In Australia they have a different view on this all. She's innocent for sure, so they now want to boycott Bali. But I'm pretty sure they can't live without being/playing ignorant fools for a few days a year. Emoticon: Puh!

Do you think so because you are Dutch and know the local laws here (for you it should be 'there' Emoticon: Wink ? I'm kind of happy that they finally made some examples. She's lucky she's not executed for this, like in Singapore.

When I entered Indonesia last time there were big signs 'Drugs is death penalty'. Can it be more clear?

But you probably also saw my reaction concerning the terrorist which gets away. That should not be related to one another of course, however it's highly odd that such things happen.

I can't make a 100% proper conclusion as well, but if you see the bag of drugs, I can make at least some conclusion for myself, right? For the rest I don't have a clue whether she is lieing or not, but the court thinks she is.
