JAKARTA - Six people were killed and nine seriously injured when a train smashed into a crowd of people, apparently enjoying the nightlife in the Jatinegara area of East Jakarta in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The victims were visitors to food and drink stalls that only open late at night on the side of railroad tracks, Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Tjiptono.
Tjiptono surmised that the victims had not heard the train coming due to the loud music that was blaring from the stalls, which offer night entertainment for poor people. "Some of those sitting on the railway track were also drunk so they did not realize the train was coming," he claimed. He said the police had questioned three witnesses.
