JAKARTA - Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla said here Saturday that the government will defend its ownership of the offshore Ambalat which was also claimed by Malaysia, while stressing dialogue remains an important way to seek settlement. "We consider that the area belongs to Indonesia. Therefore Indonesia will defend it with all security forces we have," he wasquoted by Detikcom online news service as saying.
"But because Malaysia is a friend to us... we of course will hold dialogues with Malaysia," he said during a visit to a local university. Earlier on Friday, spokesman of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Marty Natalegawa said that the government will "utilize all options to convey our position on Ambalat" and might bring the dispute to the International Court of Justice. Indonesia has sent at least four warships to increase patrols in the area.
Indonesia last week lodged a formal protest after Malaysia's oil firm Petronas awarded an oil production contract to the Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell in Ambalat, which is located between Indonesia's East Kalimantan Province and Malaysia's Sabah State. The Malaysia government insisted that the area belong to itselfby showing a map issued in 1979, which the Indonesian government termed as self-made and outdated.
