JAKARTA - The death toll from the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunamis in the Indian Ocean is approaching 115,000, following an announcement today by Indonesia's government that 79,940 died there in the disaster.
The worst-hit area of Indonesia is the western province of Aceh, where 15,000 died, according to the Health Ministry. The focus of relief operations in the country was in the city of Meulaboh, where 10,200 were killed, according to government figures. The magnitude-9 quake set off waves causing destruction along the coasts of 12 countries from Indonesia to East Africa.
