KUALA LUMPUR (MALAYSIA) - Malaysia's prime minister has assured illegal immigrants that they would not be arrested or persecuted if they leave the country voluntarily under an amnesty offer.
The premier, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, said late Saturday that illegal workers should come out immediately to avoid bottlenecks in the closing days of the amnesty.
The authorities will not detain or prosecute the illegal immigrants, Abdullah was quoted as saying by the national news agency, Bernama. Malaysia has said it hopes to evict some 400,000 of its estimated 1.2 million illegal foreign workers during the 17-day amnesty that began Friday for the Islamic holy fasting month of Ramadhan. Most of the illegal workers are from Indonesia and form the backbone of Malaysia's construction industry, but are also accused of petty crimes such as thefts.
According to the government, only 2,217 illegal immigrants, mostly Indonesians, left Malaysia on Friday, far below the 20,000 target set by the government.
