JAKARTA - Polling stations closed on Monday in Indonesia, concluding a peaceful morning of voting to select the country's next president, officials said. Jakarta election commission chairman Mohammad Taufik said ballot boxes were sealed at 1:00 pm (0600 GMT) and counting had begun after six hours of voting across the sprawling archipelago, during which there were no reports of trouble.
Incumbent Megawati Sukarnoputri faces her former top security minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the election, in which more than 150 million are eligible to vote.
The poll is the first time Indonesians have ever been able to directly choose their leader and is seen as a milestone in the country's transition to democracy since the 1998 fall of former dictator Suharto.
