JAKARTA - An Indonesian court on Monday dismissed an appeal from presidential hopeful Wiranto against the July 5 election results, ending the ex-general's bid for the country's top job. Former military chief Wiranto appealed to the constitutional court last week, arguing that he lost more than 5.4 million votes due to irregularities in the first round of Indonesia's first direct presidential election.
"In 26 provinces contested by the plaintiff, we are of the opinion that the plaintiff has not been successful in proving the premise that he has lost 5,434,660 votes," Jimly Asshiddiqie, head of the constitutional court, said in the ruling. Wiranto, who has been indicted for human rights violations by a UN-backed court in East Timor, came in third place, missing out by a few million votes on a place in a September 20 run-off between the top two candidates.
Another ex-army general, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, came first in a field of five candidates but failed to win a majority, meaning he now goes head-to head against the second place winner, incumbent President Megawati Sukarnoputri in the next round. If the court had granted Wiranto, once an adjutant to former strongman Suharto, an additional 5.3 million votes he would have garnered more votes than Megawati, entitling him to a place in the September run-off for the presidency.
