JAKARTA - National Assembly Speaker Amien Rais said he was shocked by his defeat in Indonesia's presidential election. With almost 104 million votes, or around 82 percent of the total, tallied after the July 5 first round of Indonesia's first direct presidential polls, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had 34 percent.
Second was incumbent Megawati Sukarnoputri with 26 percent, followed by former armed forces chief Wiranto with 22 percent. A candidate would need 50 percent to avoid the second round between the top two. Mrs Megawati on Tuesday expressed optimism she would make the September 20 runoff but said she would decide on coalitions only after the final result of the first round.
General Wiranto was the candidate for the largest party, Golkar. He is likely to be eliminated and interest was focused on where the party would switch its support. Fourth in the presidential race was Mr Amien of the National Mandate Party and last was current Vice President Hamzah Haz of the United Development Party.
Local television showed Mr Amien addressing housewives in his official residence where he said he was shocked for two days and underwent a phase of self-questioning. Mr Amien did not make clear his future plans. He told his audience he planned to a make brief pilgrimmage soon and will decide after that.
