JAKARTA - Former Indonesian military chief Wiranto will team up with an Islamic leader to contest the presidential election for the Golkar party, the party has announced. Solahuddin Wahid, a deputy chairman of Indonesia's largest Islamic social organisation the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), will be Wiranto's running mate, said Golkar leader Akbar Tanjung.
Golkar, once the political vehicle of former leader Suharto, won the parliamentary election on April 5 after pushing President Megawati Sukarnoputri's party into second place. The choice of Solahuddin will strengthen Wiranto's chances when Indonesia holds its first direct presidential election on July 5 even though some analysts see them as strange bedfellows.
Media reports said Solahuddin's candidacy had been approved by his brother, former president Abdurrahman Wahid who co-founded the NU-linked National Awakening Party (PKB). "God willing, we will win the presidential election on July 5 with 24 million votes owned by Golkar and 12 million votes from PKB besides the support from ulemas (Islamic scholars)," the state news agency Antara quoted Tanjung as saying.
Last week Megawati teamed up with NU leader Hasyim Muzadi in an attempt to revive her flagging campaign but his candidacy was not endorsed by the still-influential Abdurrahman Wahid. Recent opinion polls show former security minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who has been nominated by his Democrat Party, as clear presidential favourite. Golkar and Megawati's Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle are both secular-nationalist groupings. Both sought running-mates from Islamic organisations to try to supplement their appeal in the world's largest Muslim-populated nation.
