JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities plan to release more than 660 former members of a separatist army in Aceh province who have undergone five months of re-education, police said in a report here today. "They will, on Monday, be returned to their respective villages," said the head of the military police, Major General A.B. Sulaiman, according to Tempo Interactive on-line.
"Hopefully people will be able to receive them well and they can remain loyal to Indonesia," he said. The 663 were once with the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), which has been fighting since 1976 for independence for resource-rich Aceh province, at the northernmost part of Sumatra island. After being captured or surrendering, they were admitted to a "guidance centre" in Reuleut, some 30km north of Lhokseumawe, the main town in North Aceh district, the on-line news portal said.
The centre is one of three detention centres in Aceh set up to "re-educate" rebels by giving them courses in nationalism. They are also trained in a few practical skills, such as farming. Only rebels deemed not to have held senior positions in the GAM or played important roles in the guerilla movement are sent to the camps. Scores of others were released from a guidance centre in Banda Aceh this year, an Aceh military spokesman said.
