PDI-P holds on to gain with almost half of the votes counted JAKARTA - President Megawati Sukarnoputri's party maintained a slight edge over the chief rival Golkar Friday with nearly half the votes tallied from Indonesia's April 5 general election. However Megawati's Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) appeared to have suffered a big drop in support, winning 20.8 percent of 59.5 million votes tallied so far compared to the 34 percent it won in total in 1999. Golkar, the party which backed former dictator Suharto, was on 20 percent.
More than 147 million people were eligible to cast their votes in Monday's elections, only the second free vote since the 1950s. No turnout figure has been released but some estimates put it around 80 percent. Golkar predicted it would win the poll as more votes are counted from its heartland outside Java island. But there has not yet been an expected swing toward the party. Support has not even reached the 22 percent Golkar obtained in 1999 when it suffered from backing the 32-year rule of Suharto, who stepped down in May 1998 after massive civil unrest and a severe economic crisis.
Analysts said voters turned against Megawati's party -- once the symbol of opposition to Suharto -- because it squandered its chances to introduce real reform. Disgruntled former supporters complained of relatively anaemic economic growth, high unemployment, rising prices, poor social services and corruption. Votes have gone to two upstarts: the Democrat Party of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who resigned as Megawati's security minister in March, and the Islamic-based Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).
The Democrats were in fifth place Friday with 7.4 percent, followed by PKS at 6.9 percent. Support for the Democrat Party was tied to the popularity of Yudhoyono, a soft-spoken former general who is considered uncorrupt. "My calculation is 75 percent of those who voted for the Democrat Party are those who want (Yudhoyono) to be president," party deputy chairman Sys N.S. told reporters. "Many of our votes came from people who are disillusioned with the present government," he said.
Muhammad Razikun of PKS said people voted for his party because it was seen as uncorrupt and caring. "This is a clear indication that people want change," said Razikun, who is PKS campaign chief. He said the party's success was the fruit of its work over the past five years. "It's not something accidental. We work every day to help victims of disasters in the country to show that we care. We have well-organized volunteers to do charity work," Razikun said.
Two older parties, the National Awakening Party (PKB) of former president Abdurrahman Wahid, and Vice President Hamzah Haz's United Development Party, were in third and fourth place. PKB was at 13.4 percent -- roughly the same level it had in 1999 -- while Haz's party was at 8.3 percent, a drop from the 11 percent it obtained five years ago. PKB chairman Alwi Shihab said his party remained firm in its nomination of Wahid for president despite concerns about the former leader's health. Wahid is diabetic and virtually blind.
Indonesia holds its first ever direct presidential elections on July 5 and Megawati's re-election bid could be in trouble because of her party's poor showing. PDI-P secretary general Pramono Anung said Thursday the party was prepared to enter a coalition with "anyone." European Union observers called the election credible and said it was "an important step in the consolidation of Indonesia's democracy."
