MAKASSAR - Police said they detained 23 demonstrators in South Sulawesi province Saturday during protests across the country ahead of Monday's general elections. The protesters in Makassar, the South Sulawesi capital, were demonstrating in front of the local elections commission office, provincial police spokesman Andi Nurmantahia told AFP by telephone. "They had no permission," he said, adding that intelligence officers were questioning 23 of the protesters.
He did not give details of their demands but similar actions took place in Jakarta and on the resort island of Lombok, the state news agency Antara reported. Hundreds of university students in Lombok's capital, Mataram, demonstrated to warn against a return of forces linked to the regime of former dictator Soeharto, Antara said. Soeharto's son-in-law Prabowo Subianto has been campaigning for Golkar, whose nomination he seeks for Indonesia's first direct presidential election on July 5. Prabowo was discharged from the army for his alleged role in the kidnapping of pro-democracy activists ahead of Suharto's fall from power. Wiranto, Soeharto's last armed forces chief, is also seeking the Golkar presidential nomination.
