Aftershocks rattle quake-hit Papua NABIRE - Two major aftershocks Sunday rattled the eastern Indonesian town of Nabire, which is facing a mammoth rebuilding effort after earthquakes killed at least 31 people and caused widespread destruction. The first aftershock in the morning measured 5.3 on the Richter scale while the magnitude of the second was not immediately known but appeared higher, said Fauzi, head of the National Seismology Center.
"Residents said the tremor in the afternoon was stronger than in the morning," Fauzi said, adding that there were no reports of casualties from the aftershocks. resident said the afternoon temblor sent people scrambling out of their homes. "Power was up and we were starting to return to our houses but suddenly there was this strong aftershock and we ran out in panic. People screamed," Tornado told Elshinta radio.
He said electricity went off again after the aftershock. Residents had moved to tents outside their homes for fears of further aftershocks and Tornado said they were traumatized. "We are resigned, frustrated and traumatized. No running water for shower and drink. We are in misery. We just eat whatever we have because no shop is open to sell food," he said.
A quake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale -- thought to be the largest quake measured in the region since 2000 -- struck the town in northwestern Papua province Friday. At least 33 aftershocks have been recorded since then, including one measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale Saturday, the official said. Papua military spokesman Colonel G.T. Situmorang said the death toll had reached at least 31 and could increase. "That's according to the information I received last night. I haven't received an update," Situmorang told AFP. He said six people died following the biggest aftershock on Saturday.
Papua provincial police spokesman Daud Sihombing said the destruction was "huge." "The damage is so huge that it won't return to normal in a short time. It will take time to rebuild the damaged facilities," Sihombing told AFP. At least 250 homes were badly damaged and 31 others destroyed by fire, Sihombing said, adding that five mosques, eight churches and eight schools were also ruined. A brand new district council headquarters, completed in January at a cost of 20 billion rupiah (2.4 million dollars), and eight bridges were wrecked, Sihombing said.
The quake also damaged the prison, the district court building and other government offices. State oil firm Pertamina said Friday's quake damaged pipelines at its Nabire depot and caused fuel leaks. Residents said fuel has been rationed to two litres a person. The quake also left cracks in the airport building and runway. A local official, Anselmus Petrus Youw, said the damage was estimated at 360 billion rupiah. United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has called on the international community to assist the Indonesian government in providing relief aid.
Sihombing said 200 people were injured, 79 of whom were in serious condition. Twelve injured people have been transferred to another Papuan town of Biak because their injuries required more serious attention. France's earth sciences observatory said Friday's was the largest quake measured in the region since 2000. The Indonesian archipelago, located on the "Pacific Rim of Fire" noted for its volcanic and seismic activity, is one of the world's most earthquake-prone regions.
