JAKARTA - A large undersea earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale shook parts of Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said. The temblor was centered under the Sulawesi Sea, 136 kilometers (85 miles) northwest of Kotamobagu town on north Sulawesi island, said agency official Muhammad Yusuf.
The tremor caused residents in several places in Sulawesi to flee their homes in panic, but there were no reports of damage or tidal waves, Yusuf said. Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, is prone to earthquakes because of its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire''_ volcanic arcs and oceanic trenches partly encircling the Pacific Basin.
In June 2000, a magnitude 7.9 temblor rocked parts of Sumatra island, killing more than 100 people and damaging hundreds of homes.
