JAKARTA - An army tank rammed a public minibus on Indonesia's Java island on Saturday, killing 18 people and injuring at least five others, authorities said. The vehicle was returning from military exercises near the town of Magelang, central Java, when it hit the minibus and rolled on top of it, said police Lt. Heru Widodo.
The tank driver lost control of the vehicle shortly before the accident, which took place on a narrow and winding road, witnesses said. "The tank was going from side to side,'' Aditya, who goes by a single name, told el-Shinta radio station. Two of the 18 people killed were soldiers in the tank. The rest were passengers on the bus, said Widodo. The five injured were being treated at a local hospital, he said.
The tank was part of the army's Ambarawa Cavalry Division. An officer at the division confirmed the accident had taken place, but declined to answer any more questions. Magelang is 360 kilometers (225 miles) southeast of Jakarta, Indonesia's capital.
