YOGYAKARTA - Driving around in Bandung, so much to see. I was planning on visiting a location just outside Bandung, called Kota Baru Parahyangan. They are building a completely new city there within a few years, at least thatís the plan. The area is now home to open landscapes with sawahís, some farms and few people. The construction of the about 12,000 houses, 2 schools, a hospital, university, shopping mall, and everything else that comes with Indonesian life, has just started about a year ago. At this moment, only a food court and some 150 houses are completed, not forgetting to mention the 6 lane road running from the end of the jalan tol (tol road) to far beyond the first set of completed houses to several locations where construction just has started (as it seems).
Starting from downtown Bandung, where they are constructing a big fly-over for a new highway from Jakarta to Cirebon (I donít know when if will be finished, if ever.. whehe.. ), you enter the jalan tol through toll gate Pasteur, one familiar Dutch name already. But there are much more places which remind of the Dutch past in their names and buildings. A lot of street names which used to be completely Dutch, are just renamed to the Indonesian name after the proclaimed independence in 1945, Jalan Eyckman used to be Eyckmanstraat, which still excists in the Netherlands in many cities and villages.
In and around Bandung are also to be seen: the first University built by the Dutch where Indonesians were allowed to go to; ITB, Institut Teknologi Bandung, but under a slightly different Dutch name of course. Gedung Sate is another Dutch building, which used to be the Dutch governors place, but now has become the place of the Indonesian Governor to Bandung and surrounding areas.

Too bad I fell ill two days, leaving me with a sore throat the first day, which has now been replaced by a dripping nose. Itís not really handy when you are on holiday, but upto now I managed to do well, and travel around stillÖ However itís not the best thing to do, I took the train to Yogya yesterday evening. The train was scheduled to leave at seven in the evening, and eventually left at about half past seven, not a bad score, right? This train started in Bandung, so I had a fresh train when I went in, and the trains first scheduled stop, for unloading passengers, would be in Yogya, my final destination for this time. The Turangga train is an eksekutip one, costing you Rp. 120,000 for the trip between Bandung and Yogya, single trip. I donít know about the prices to Surabaya, but I know the train takes over 12 hours to get there. Remarkably the Turangga train from Bandung to Yogya takes as long as the Taksaka train from Jakarta to Yogya, while Bandung is already three hours from Jakarta towards Yogya. It still beats me.
I spent the first night in Yogya in Metro Guesthouse in Jalan Prawirotaman II because Agung Guest House, the recommended one my Dutch travellers in Bogor, as closed. Not closed, but only for the night, since I got out of the train about three oíclock in the night. No wonder why the place was closed. Whehe.
This coming night I will spend in Hotel Kota again. Prices have gone up almost 300 percent since I last was here, and I hope the service has improved as well, because the rooms didnít really improve. I think I will move to Hotel Mataram tomorrow, the same rate, but breakfast included and itís brand new, so I would like to give it a try as well. If I donít like the place, itís easy to skip to another place. For sure itís not all good hotels and cheaper places that Indonesia has to offer, and especially donít trust the places located in magazines and books, since things can change overnight here.

Revisions

On 6 September 2003 I edited the story on certain small points to make it more understandable for the visitors. The first version was written during my holiday, in a warnet in Jogja. This version should be better though.
