BANDUNG - Not long after I had settelled in South Jakarta, the people who live in the house came home, so I had the chance to meet them again. Bapak was home late, but he liked to see me again, same like the sister of my friend here. She’s about to graduate in a few months, and besides wishing her the best, I also got to talk to her for a few hours, on the late evening of that Wednesday. A talk that I in fact never had with her before, so it was a true delight that evening. I went to bed about midnight, remembering that she wanted to go to campus the next day, and I could go with her to the train station, since I was leaving for Bandung tomorrow.
I set the alarm-clock of my HP (‘handphone’ = cell-phone = mobile phone), woke up kind of early, when I took a look through the house, no one else was actually awake, so I decided to go back to bed for some more sleep. Two more hours to be exact. At that time I had the feeling that they already may have left without me. Of course that wasn’t the case, but once has to be the first time, right?
The night in Jakarta Selatan felt nice, I had a good night of sleep, so I had the feeling I could bear some more than the previous days where I didn’t get into bed before two o’clock or something. Really late, considdering I usually get to bed somewhere between 10 and 12, and during the wintertime sometimes even earlier. But the climate is kind of different in here, which makes a big difference of course.
After dropping Cherry at the Kampus Trisakti I was brought to Gambir station. I got a ticket for the executive train to Bandung, the Argogede. A ticket nowadays costs Rp. 70.000, but you will get a drink and a snack aboard tha plane... eeerr.. train. During the four hour ride you can buy food and drinks for a reasonable price, just a little bit more as in the streets. But I was busy with other things, I had to take a four hour look outside, because I just love to see what has changed over the years, and what hasn’t. It was also the first time I took this train, making it even better for me.
The first hour you won’t see more than Jakarta and Bogor kampung-kampung, as soon as you have past these, the landscape gets more green and open and you will be able to see several nice views, including vulcanoes, mountain peaks, rivers and villages. Of course this all still is not much compared to the area beyond Bandung, for example the part to Yogya. I have passed in 2001, but with another train than this one. Back then we had the early-morning train from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, the Taksaka.
Most of the time I wasn’t having a look outside, because my neck hurted, and I was a little tired of the late nights. I was definately going to end those. Aaah.. it’s funny to stay awake late, but it’s a little harder to bear the consequences of it, especially when It’s your holiday. Not soon after I almost fell asleep completely, the train arrived at Bandung station. In between I had seen all kind of small stations, and places of which I had never heard the name before in my life, even if the places are bigger than my hometown. (That’s not very hard with only 200,000 inhabitants)

That evening it was after two o’clock in the night before we went to bed. Together with other people in the homestay (in the Dago area, but not the old European area) I watched a movie, and later on another one, which was finished kind of too late, but it was not possible to stop watching.. whehe.
Today we went to see the Gedung Sate, one of the old Dutch colonial buildings, and also another part of the Dutch/Indonesian history by visiting the concentration camp just outside the Dago area. There are two human-made caves, one is Dutch, and the other is Japanese. They both served for the same purpose, to lock away forced-labourers. They were not allowed to get away, otherwhise their position was likely to be told on. Both caves aren’t finished, because both the Dutch and Japanese had to leave in quite a hurry when the time was there.
At this moment I just bought a ticket to Yogya, I will leave for Yogya Tuesday, and it’s likely I will spend my Independence Day there. Afterwards, I will go back to another place… that schedule is still unknown.

Revisions

On 6 September 2003 I edited the story on certain small points to make it more understandable for the visitors. The first version was written during my holiday, in a warnet in Bandung. This version should be better though.
