JAKARTA - East Timor's foreign minister said his country planned to send soldiers to study in Indonesia's military academies - the same ones that schooled the army which brutally occupied his nation. Jose Ramos-Horta's comments come as East Timor holds rights trials for abuses committed by Indonesian troops and its proxy militias before and after voters overwhelmingly approved its independence in a UN-sponsored referendum in 1999.
Timor has indicted over 250 people, including the former chief of Indonesia's armed forces, General Wiranto, for alleged human rights abuses. "Timorese officers from our defence force will study at Indonesian military academies. This is a gesture of consolidating our relationship," said Ramos-Horta. Delivering a public lecture in Singapore, the Nobel Peace Prize winner said maintaining a good relationship with its former ruler was more important than seeking justice for rights abuses committed by Indonesian troops and militias.
"We are pushing for more institutional cooperation between our police and theirs," he said. East Timor, which celebrated a year of independence on May 20, has around 3,000 troops and 1,500 police officers - mostly former rebels who waged the guerrilla war with Indonesian soldiers. Jakarta also established a rights tribunal, but only five - free pending appeals - of the 17 accused have been convicted.
More than 1,500 people died and over 250,000 people were displaced in the 1999 violence in East Timor.
