BANDA ACEH - Police in the Indonesian province of Aceh say they are hunting civilian activists suspected of supporting separatist rebels. They say activists who give support or assistance to the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) are violating the law and could face charges of subversion that carry the death penalty. The police claim many are student activists at an institute for religious sciences in Banda Aceh or members of non-governmental organisations.
Police also are questioning 70 detained members of GAM, including five peace negotiators who were arrested soon after the government declared martial law and launched its military operation on May 19. In Thailand, three Indonesian police officers are working with local police in hunting for a senior GAM official, Zakaria Zaman bin Kaman. He is described as GAM's 'defence minister' and is accused of smuggling weapons to Aceh from Thailand.
An Indonesian police spokesman says: "We hope for a good outcome." In Aceh, up to 40,000 police and soldiers are confronting an estimated 5,000 rebels, in Indonesia's biggest military operation for a quarter of a century.
