JAKARTA - Smoke haze from burning vegetation has returned to parts of the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo, and is starting to affect visibility. A meteorology official at Pekanbaru in central Sumatra said the haze had reduced morning and late afternoon visibility to between two and three kilometres compared to the normal level of above 10 kilometres.
"The worst was on May 19 when morning visibility was at a mere 100 metres, but it is now back to around two kilometres this morning," he said on Tuesday. The official said satellite monitoring images for Sunday showed 38 hot spots - areas of high temperature believed to be fires - in the lower half of Sumatra. "We have noticed a lot of vegetation burning north of Pekanbaru since yesterday," he said.
In Borneo, the town of Pontianak in West Kalimantan is facing similar haze problems, according to a meteorology office there. "We believe that farmers in the area have began to clear their land again ahead of the new planting season," the meteorology office said. "The haze is thickest early in the morning and in late afternoon." In Central Kalimantan, one of the provinces usually hardest hit by the annual haze problem, rain prevented thick haze from forming.
The Indonesian government has banned the practice of using fire to clear land for replanting but enforcement has been weak. Both small farmers and large landowners continue to set fires though it is an offence to do so.
