BANDA ACEH - Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri has met top ministers to decide whether to go back to war with separatist rebels in Aceh. The move came after a planned weekend meeting in Geneva designed to shore up their peace deal was abruptly canceled. The Indonesian Government withdrew in protest after the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) demanded the start be postponed for two days.
Vice President Hamzah Haz said the government still wanted to settle the problem peacefully but would not hesitate to take other options. Leading military officers and some hawks in the government are pressing for a renewed military operation in the energy-rich province on Sumatra island.
Jakarta has accused the GAM of violating a peace pact agreed last December by continuing to campaign for independence. Each side also accuses the other of launching attacks.
