JAKARTA - Indonesia said on Wednesday it had registered its second probable case of SARS, the deadly virus which has broken out over large parts of Asia. "We have a new probable case involving a 65-year-old male in Medan," Syafei Ahmad of the Indonesian health ministry told reporters, referring to Indonesia's third largest city.
Ahmad said the victim, an ethnic Chinese with Indonesian nationality, had returned from a trip to Singapore on April 7, and been hospitalised a few days later with a higher fever. Indonesia's only other probable SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) case thus far was for a British national from Hong Kong working in the country. He broke quarantine to return to Hong Kong after he was allowed to leave hospital for his Indonesian residence.
The health ministry says Indonesia has three suspected cases, one step lower than probable, and several other cases under observation to see if they rate the suspected or probable classification. Worldwide, at least 236 people have died from SARS, with more than 4,200 infections. Singapore, Hong Kong and China are the Asian countries most affected by the flu-like disease.
Despite the significant flow of traffic between Indonesia and those countries, officials in Jakarta say Indonesia does not have any confirmed cases of the killer flu-like virus.
