JAKARTA - Indonesia said Friday that it has confirmed its first case of a deadly flu-like illness that has swept through Asia. Mariani Reksoprodjo, a health ministry spokeswoman, said a 47-year-old British businessman had been diagnosed with severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS. The man, who had visited Hong Kong and Singapore before arriving in Indonesia, has been in a Jakarta hospital since Wednesday, she said. Indonesia now joins 18 other countries that have reported SARS cases. The disease has claimed more than 110 lives worldwide and sickened more than 2,700 people. Mainland China and Hong Kong, Canada, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia have reported deaths, with the highest number in China and Hong Kong.
The British Embassy in Jakarta said it had not been informed of the case. Reksoprodjo said nine other people with SARS-like symptoms were under observation. Some health officials fear Indonesia is vulnerable to an outbreak because of its porous borders and inefficient health system. Hundreds of thousands of Indonesian migrant workers are employed in Asian countries that have numerous SARS cases.
The World Health Organization has so far praised Indonesia for the preventive measures it has put in place to contain the disease. Jakarta has stopped sending migrant workers to other Asian countries, beefed up medical checks at ports of entry and enacted an emergency decree that allows it to quarantine anyone suspected of having SARS.
"This means we're . . . going to do everything we can to prevent this disease from spreading," Reksoprodjo said.
