JAKARTA - Indonesia has temporarily suspended the supply of its workers to the Asia Pacific in view of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) crisis in the region, Manpower and Transmigration Minister Jacob Nuwa Wea said. He said the move was part of a series of steps taken by the government to check the spread of the disease into the country.
"The decision was based on Law No. 4/1984 on communicable diseases," he was quoted as saying by The Jakarta Post. The freeze affects agencies recruiting workers for countries like China, Hong Kong and Singapore. Prior to this, Indonesia had also temporarily stopped sending workers to the Middle East following the United States-led invasion of Iraq. Indonesia used to supply an average of 500,000 workers every month to countries in the Middle East.
Jacob said he did not have the number of workers who were affected by the latest move. However, he said Indonesia, which declared a national alert against SARS on Thursday, supplied about 4,000 workers to Hong Kong and between 2,500 and 3,000 workers to Singapore every month.
Although Indonesia has not recorded any confirmed cases of SARS so far, two of its citizen in Singapore and Hong Kong were reported to have contracted the deadly disease. He said the government had ordered its diplomatic missions in the Asia Pacific to intensify their monitoring of Indonesians working in the region.
Those returning home from the SARS-hit countries have to undergo strict checks to ensure that they are free from the mysterious illness that has claimed some 80 lives worldwide.
