JAKARTA - Indonesia has advised its nationals against travelling to five Asian nations where cases of atypical pneumonia or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) have been reported. The countries are China (Guangdong Province), Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand.
Health Minister Dr Achmad Sayudi, who issued the travel advisory, also advised Indonesians who had recently returned from visiting these countries to immediately seek medical treatment should they have symptoms of this illness. "Not that we (wish to) stop our people from visiting these countries, it is just that we want them to be more careful," he said.
So far no cases of SARS had been reported in Indonesia, he said. Last March 15, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that an Indonesian was suspected to have the illness but the person was later verified as not having symptoms of the SARS. The Geneva-based body had also said last Saturday that Indonesia was among the countries to have reported cases of SARS along with Canada and Philippines.
Meanwhile a senior government official said a widespread scare on the illness could adversely affect Indonesia's tourism industry which showed signs of recovering from the impact of last year's bomb blasts in Bali. The Jakarta Post reported the chairman of the state-backed Indonesian Tourism Board, Setyanto P. Santoso, as saying the impact of the illness could be much greater than the impending war in Iraq.
This was so if no specific treatment could be immediately found against the illness, he said.
