LONDON - The British Foreign Office strengthened its official travel advice on Indonesia on Tuesday, warning British citizens there to avoid places of worship over the Christmas period. Citing "recent information received concerning Jakarta", the Foreign Office warned on its website that Britons should exercise "extreme caution" in all public places. It also repeated its advice against travel to the country and said anybody already there should consider leaving if their visit was not essential. The warning follows criticism of the Foreign Office for failing to upgrade their warnings against travel to Indonesia ahead of October's Bali bomb, which left at least 190 people dead. The Foreign Office website (www.fco.gov.uk) warned on Tuesday that "British nationals should be particularly careful in Bali, Jakarta, Balikpapan, Makassar, Surabaya and Yogyakarta". It added that particular care should be taken in places popular with tourists, such as places of worship, nightclubs, bars and shopping malls. On Christmas Eve 2000, at least 15 people were killed and many others injured in a series of blasts at churches in nine Indonesian cities.
