Construction of nuclear power plant 'to start next year' Once more the Indonesian government has recently picked up plans to start the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the country. Met with protests and controversy earlier, the power plant should still be constructed on the Muria Peninsula in Central Java. The Minister of Research and Technology, Suharna Surapratana, has said yesterday that the blueprints for the plant were to be finished soon.

Minister: 'Nuclear power plant to be built in Banten' The Minister of Research and Technology, Kusmayanto Kadiman, has said that the government is planning on building a nuclear power plant on the northern shore of Banten province. Kadiman said that the power plant was to be constructed between 2015 and 2020 and should have a capacity of 1.000 Megawatt. The total cost of the project is some two billion euro.

Indonesia to build four nuclear power plants by 2025 The Indonesian government plans to build four nuclear power plants by 2025 to meet electricity demand, an official said Wednesday. "If one nuclear power plant can produce 1,200 megawatts of electricity, we need four plants by 2025 to meet our demand," State Minister for Research and Technology Kusmayanto Kadiman was quoted by the national Antara news agency as saying.

Indonesia and South Korea sign nuclear cooperation deal Medco Energi Internasional and Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. from South Korea have signed a preliminary pact to build a nuclear reactor in Indonesia, which has become a hot item due to danger of earthquakes in the country. Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Mining and Energy, Wednesday said that both energy firms had finalized deals with a total value of around 6.5 billion euro during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's three-day visit to Seoul.

Thousands rally against nuclear power plants Thousands of people demonstrated in the province of central Java today to protest the government plan to build a nuclear power plant in the city of Kudus. Local residents as well as environment activists hit the streets and public places in Kudus, 400 kilometers east of Jakarta. They protest the construction of the power plant which is to be started in 2016.

South Korea, Indonesia agree to build reactors, share nuclear fuel and technology Indonesia and South Korea agreed this week to consider jointly building nuclear power plants and exchanging fissile material and technology, according to documents obtained Thursday. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his South Korean counterpart Roh Moo-hyun signed a bilateral agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy Monday, but kept the details under wraps.

Minister: Indonesia focuses on nuclear cooperation for peaceful purposes Indonesia will in the medium and long term focus on nuclear cooperation with several other countries for peaceful purposes, including the development of the national defense industry, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said. "For the time being we will not establish nuclear cooperation for defense purposes, but only for peaceful purposes in accordance with the agreement that had been signed," Juwono said after opening an Educational Communication Forum here on Tuesday.

Russia, Indonesia sign deal on nuclear power cooperation Russia and Indonesia have signed an agreement on civilian nuclear power cooperation, the Russian Federal Nuclear Power Agency said Friday. The agreement, inked by the agency chief, Sergei Kiriyenko, and Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda, is part of the Russia-Indonesia summit in Moscow, which started earlier in the day with a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, on his three-day visit to Russia.

Russia to build Indonesia’s first nuclear power plant Russia’s power grid monopoly UES will build Indonesia’s first nuclear power plant, local media reported on Monday, Oct. 16. The facility will be located in Gorontalo province, Sulawesi Island, in order to meet long-term demand for electricity there and in nearby provinces, The Jakarta Post reported.

Iran and Indonesia consider nuclear energy cooperation Iran and Indonesia are preparing to discuss possible cooperation in nuclear technology for “nonmilitary” purposes. The matter is likely to be tackled during a visit by Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla to Iran at the end of Ramadan, which finishes in the last week of October. Breaking the news, Iran's Ambassador Behrouz Kamal Vandi said collaboration for a "concrete" policy on nuclear cooperation will be discussed during the meeting in the context of several alternative energy sources. He said: "Nuclear energy is very important to the two countries to reduce their reliance on current sources of energy.”

Indonesia to build nuclear power plant in 2010 The Indonesian government will begin the construction of a nuclear power plant in 2010 or 2011 as part of the country's energy diversification programme, a senior official said Monday. "Accordingly, the tender for the nuclear power plant construction should take place in 2008," Minister of Research and Technology Koesmayanto Kadiman was quoted as saying by news website Detikcom.

Indonesia, the world\'s fourth most-populous nation, has intensified its plans for the construction of nuclear power plants in an attempt to alleviate dependency on oil-and-gas to accommodate the growing demand for electricity, said Eko Hatmo, a senior official at the state-run national Atomic Energy Agency.

Indonesia may have nuclear power plant in 5 years Indonesia will likely have a nuclear power plant for electricity within the next five years if the country begins the building of the plant this year, Indonesian Minister of Research and Technology Kusmayanto Kadiman said here on Tuesday. According to the minister, Vice President Jusuf Kalla had instructed to accelerate the supply of electricity to meet the country's strong demand and nuclear energy was thought to be one of the main solutions.

If oil-crunched Indonesia goes nuclear As the only Asian member and current president of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) oil cartel, Indonesia should be capitalising on the high prices for crude oil and laughing its way to the bank. South-east Asia's largest country, and by far its most populous, has the world's 16th largest proven oil reserves. However, output has declined in the past three years from an average of just over 1.2 million barrels per day to about 1.1 million now, below its Opec quota of 1.27 million. Official figures published in Jakarta last month show Indonesia became a net importer of crude oil for the first time in February and March.

Indonesia considers S Korean nuclear partnership Indonesia and South Korea are considering building a $200 million nuclear power plant on Madura island off the coast of East Java. Indonesian Research and Technology Minister Hatta Rajasa says South Korea is very enthusiastic about the project. Mr Rajasa is quoted in local media as saying South Korea is willing to bear the entire cost.

Nuclear power station to be build by 2015 Indonesia could build its first nuclear power station by 2015 to meet the energy needs of its growing population, the research and technology minister was quoted as saying on Tuesday. "We have to develop nuclear power," said M. Hatta Rajasa, state news agency Antara reported. "We have the ability to do so." Rajasa's ambitious plan comes at a time of serious security and economic problems for the the world's most populous Muslim nation.
