The canal starts at the Manggarai gate, where this commemorative stone can be found. The gate in Manggarai was constructed in 1919.

The Barack Obama statue has soon become a controversial addition to the city of Jakarta after it was publicly revealed late 2009. The funders of the statue, mostly wealthy residents of the up-class Menteng area in central Jakarta, just wanted to express their happiness with the fact that the little boy Barry has become president Obama of the United States decades later. While others say he has done nothing for Indonesia and thus placing a statue of him in a public space is not appropriate.

The beach of Kuta on Lombok. This beach in the southern part of the island - just like in Bali - is one of the most well-known beaches of the island. It is a nice white sand beach, but the sand is larger in size than that of the southern beaches in Bali. A project to develop this region into another tourist destination failed to materialize, which leaves this area only with a Holiday Inn hotel and houses of local residents. It is a completely different world than the Kuta some 150 kilometers away.

The 'Gili Islands' - which is in fact a strange name because the word 'Gili' already means 'island' - are a series of small islands off the western coast of the island of Lombok which have become very popular in recent years. The islands are known as very free; drugs are said to be widely available. Unfortunately, possession and use of drugs in Indonesia is usually punished with many years behind bars.

A stupa on the Borobudur temple in the neighborhood of Magelang in Central Java. The story goes that if you can touch the head of the Buddha-statue inside the stupa, this will bring good luck. The generally somewhat smaller Indonesians do have more problems touching the head than the average Westerner that tries it.

This time indeed no picture of Indonesian nature, but a building project that has never been finished. The picture was a part of a concrete pillar which eventually should have become an elevated toll road. That highway was never constructed and these pillars are lost in the landscape along Kali Malang in the regency of Bekasi, directly east of Jakarta.
