The day before the fall of Suharto Controversy has surrounded the book written by former President Habibie, which reveals a number of new historical facts about the events of May 1998. Indonesia's silence on Timor Leste crisis For two months Timor Leste has gone through its worst crisis since its independence. Much of the country's trade and economy depend on us. Much of the geo-political space in which it has to pursue its foreign policy, and to achieve stability and justice, depends on us. They use our language, even smoke the same kretek cigarettes as we do. And, in the most fundamental sense, they had suffered under "our" harsh occupation. Yet, with a few exceptions, many prefer to remain silent, ignoring their sorry plight. Why?

ABDUL Latief unsteadily enters the office of a Jakarta human rights group with a young man at his elbow. He struggles to mouth an intelligible greeting, the consequence of a stroke he suffered some years ago. Latief, a retired colonel, is a member of a dwindling generation to have an intimate recollection of the rise of modern Indonesia. He was witness to, and a crucial participant in, the events that produced the regime of former president Suharto.

What intrigues me about the 'old Indonesia' is the Dutch part. Maybe because I'm Dutch myself, but mainly because there is fairly little I know about it actually. If I think about how little information I got in school over the years I actually was in school. I wrote about this earlier, and about the facts that the Dutch maybe aren't proud of what they did in the Far East. But now the other side, there is no denying that the Dutch actually have been in Indonesia if it only were for that they left behind in buildings only.

For the past 40 years Hotel Indonesia in Central Jakarta has been the capital's major landmark, and its fame is often linked to the country's political pride. Built to fill the need for an international standard hotel for the 1962 Asian Games, Hotel Indonesia was the first high-rise hotel in the country. At that time, it had 14 floors and 400 rooms compared to its current 586 rooms.

Major celebrations are underway in the Netherlands to commemorate the Dutch East India Company's (VOC) 400th anniversary this year. This commemoration is especially targeted at Holland's younger generation, to instill a sense of pride in their history. However, nations that have suffered under colonialism, such as Indonesia, would surely have a different perspective on the VOC, the trading company with political and military power.

This 81st article on old Batavia looks at the history of rail travel in the city. The state railway company might be advised to follow the practice of its Dutch predecessors in averting bad luck and accidents.
