More than 22 percent of the population of the Mimika regency in Papua, or about 40,000 people there, are illiterate. Mimika, with a population of 175,000, ranks fifth in terms of the illiteracy rate in the province, after Wamena, Merauke, Paniai and Nabire regencies, said Yesaya Sombuk, head of Mimika Education Agency, on Tuesday.

Susi Air has announced that it will start serving the route Jakarta - Pangandaran via Bandung. The flight will depart from Halim Perdanakusuma airport in southern Jakarta, will make a stopover in Bandung and will continue the trip to Pangandaran from there. Normal travel time from Jakarta to Pangandaran is about six hours, but with this flight it will be shortened to about one hour.

The traffic police in the Greater Jakarta area has fined some 90 illegal street racers at several places in Jakarta early this morning. The police held raids on several locations where street races normally occur. Owners of 18 driver licenses and 72 STNK (vehicle registration cards) were handed out fines.

GE Transportation and PT Kereta Api (PTKA), Indonesia’s state-controlled railway, announced today that PTKA has confirmed an order for 20 C20-EMP locomotives with deliveries scheduled for 2010 and 2011. The companies have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that commits the parties to developing a long-term plan for the purchase or lease of up to 150 additional locomotives that will be specifically designed for Indonesia.

The European Union (EU) has lifted its restriction on four Indonesian air carriers from entering its territory, Director of Air Transport of Indonesian Transport Ministry Herry Bakti quoted EU ambassador to Indonesia Julian Wilson as saying here on Tuesday. The four carriers are leading carrier Garuda Indonesia, Mandala Airlines, Airfast Indonesia and Prime Air, Bakti said. All of them have potential to open routes to Europe, according to the ministry.

The Indonesian police has boosted security in Papua province in easternmost Indonesia ahead of the presidential election on July 8, following some incidents recently by the separatist group, National Police Spokesman Abubakar Nateraprawira said here Friday. The police has sent over 300 personnel from the headquarters and Makassar in South Sulawesi province to help the local security officers in Papua to step up security, the spokesman said.

A shortage of fuel at Bali's port of Benoa has forced 600 ships from an estimated fleet of 830 fishing boats to remain alongside until more fuel becomes available. According to the Bali Post, around 9,000 fishing ships crews have been idled by the fuel shortage that has brought protests from the Indonesian Longline Tuna Fishing Association. (ALTI).

The newly built Suramadu bridge between the city of Surabaya on the island of Java and the island of Madura is expected to last a century. The lifespan is mainly based on the volume of traffic that will use the bridge. According to the head of the executing body for the Suramadu bridge, Akhmad Ghofar Ismail, the bridge is able to accept an incredible increase in volume of traffic. Furthermore a twin bridge can always be built if needed.

Of course these phones should only be used with a Telkomsel 12 month contract. It was only several months ago that Telkomsel officially launched the iPhone 3G in Indonesia, back then prices started at 3.999.000 Rupiah for the 8GB version and 4.999.000 for the 16GB version.

Two Sumatran elephants have been shot and killed in Indonesia's Bengkulu province, a conservation official said Tuesday. The elephants were killed last week in the Kerinci Seblat National Park, said Dudy Wuryanto, head of the nature conservation agency in the neighbouring province of Jambi. He said the motive for the killings was unclear.

Four Dutch journalists have been arrested in the Indonesian province of Papua, Dutch news wire ANP reported Tuesday. The four were arrested in the city of Jayapura while reporting on a rally calling for Papua's independence. The Jakarta Transportation Board is preparing steps to put automated gates at the recently opened Busway route Lebak Bulus - Harmoni. These gates will be the same as those installed on the second Busway route Pulogadung - Harmoni. The gates have to be installed to prevent other road users using the reserved bus-lanes on the route. "People have to learn that," said Riza Hasyim, vice-president of the Jakarta Transportation Board.

Indonesia has opened a tsunami museum in Aceh province to remember the severity impact of the catastrophe in 2004 that killed more than 230,000 people in Asia and most of them in the province. The museum displays pictures of victims and the huge damage in coastal areas of the province in northern tip of Sumatra island when a tsunami triggered by a strong earthquake devastated the area on Dec. 24 2004.

Jakarta Post reports that Bali's Governor Made Mangku Pastika has now confirmed that Bali will move ahead with plans to build a second airport near its northern shore. This announcement came after an order from Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla decreeing that the expansion of Bali's current airport in Tuban must move ahead and be completed by 2011.

Vice-President Jusuf Kalla has ordered the Minister of Transport, Jusman Syafii Djamal, and the director of Indonesian airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I, Bambang Darwoto, to speed up the extension of the runway at Yogyakarta International Airport Adi Sucipto. Kalla hopes that at the end of the year the airport can be used to receive big airplanes so that the number of tourists will increase.

PT Kereta Api - the state-owned railway company, has announced that starting today, prices for their 'ekonomi' class intercity trains will be lowered with some eight percent. "We have already put up information about the new prices at the stations which are serviced by our economy-class trains," said Akhmad Sujadi, the regional head of the First Operational Zone of the railway company.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will appoint batik designs from Indonesia as one of the cultural heritages in May this year. The secretary of Coordinating Minister for Social Welfare, Indroyono Soesilo, said that the Indonesian people are hoping to establish batik design as heritage as soon as possible. "If UNESCO will recognize batik designs, it will be good for Indonesia since it will recognize our ancestors across the world," said Indroyono in Yogyakarta yesterday.

Indonesia will launch a network adopting the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) broadband technology next year to improve access to the Internet across the country, an official said Sunday quoted by the Jakarta Post. As of 31 December 2008, four banknotes which were issued in 1998, are no longer valid tender in Indonesia. The banknotes are officially withdrawn at the end of the year since they have been replaced by new ones in recent years. The banknotes that are withdrawn are the 10.000 Rupiah banknote with the image of Cut Nyak Dhien, the 20.000 Rupiah banknote with Ki Hajar Dewantara, the 50.000 Rupiah banknote with WR. Soepratman and the 100.000 Rupiah banknote with Soekarno and Hatta. The last one is made from polymer, not to be mistaken with the paper one, which will still be valid.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has forced the Bakrie Group to fulfill the complete payment for damages to people who have become victims to the mud flow in eastern Java. The payment should be completed as early as Monday. This news was announced to journalists by the Minister of Public Works, Djoko Kirmanto. Djoko told that he had a private meeting with the president earlier yesterday in which Yudhoyono asked him to summon Nirwan Bakri. "Let's get Nirwan here, be sure it's today," Djoko repeated Yudhoyono.
