Long-simmering tensions between indigenous Dayaks and immigrant Madurese suddenly exploded in the town of Sampit, Central Kalimantan, in the middle of February 2001. Within days, isolated killings perpetrated by both sides had developed into a one-sided massacre of Madurese by enraged Dayaks. In the following weeks the killings spread to other areas in the province and by early April almost the entire Madurese population had fled the province. The massacre of about 500 – and possibly many more - Madurese by Dayaks and the flight of virtually the entire Madurese community closely resembled two similar events in the Sambas district in the northern part of West Kalimantan in 1996-7 and in 1999 and highlighted the danger of violence spreading to West and East Kalimantan.

From his grief-gouged eyes to the way he presses his hands together to stop them from shaking, it's clear that if Syamsudin Noor makes it through the next few weeks, he is still a dead man inside. Syamsudin has pushed through a crowd of fellow refugees to tell his story, describing in patient detail how a visitation of almost unimaginable brutality destroyed his remote village of Sangai in Indonesia's Kalimantan province. "All my children, my grandchildren were killed," he mourns. "They cut off their heads and then cut them up and took them away to eat. There were a lot of Madurese in Sangai. Now 95% of us are dead."

Blood. countless gallons of blood soaked deep into the clay of a soccer field. There have been two heavy thunderstorms in the four days since 118 children, women and men—Madurese refugees huddled together and promised safe passage—were systematically butchered on the high-school playing field in Parenggean, a logging town deep in central Kalimantan. Those rains weren't cleansing enough: in the still of a tropical afternoon, the sweet stink of putrescence hangs in the air like the unquiet spirits of those murdered here. Halerin, a stocky sawmill hand in his thirties, was at the field that night. His account:

Civil emergency status extended three months The government will grant a three month extension to the civil emergency status in Maluku based on Law No. 23 (1959). Continuing violence in the troubled province was given as the reason for the extension. Governor of Maluku, Saleh Latuconsina as the authority of civil emergency and its four members, consisting of the, the Pattimura Military Commander-in-Chief, Brig. Gen. I Made Yasa, the Maluku Police Chief, Brig. Gen. Firman Gani, and the Maluku High Prosecutor’s Office, prepared working agenda for the next three months. Following a meeting, the civil emergency expert staff coordinator, Dra. Mrs. Paula B. Renyaan, told TEMPO Interaktif that the new agenda would be submitted to President Abdurrahman Wahid for consideration. When asked about an evaluation of the first civil emergency period, Paula said it was not necessary. During every civil emergency meeting, Paula added, members always conduct an evaluation. Consequently, the authorities will request the president to reduce the numbers of Indonesian Military personnel and increase the Mobil Brigade troops. The troop exchange request is expected to improve civil emergency implementation that has been effective since June 27. Meanwhile, Renyaan said that demands from both warring groups to interrogate and try the masterminds behind the violence would be handled by the Deputy Governor of Maluku for Social Welfare. “We will investigation those people accused by both groups,” he said.
