The US Geological Survey reported the quake was centered 135 km west of Bengkulu on Sumatra, at 02.49 local time on Wednesday (19:49 GMT on Tuesday). It was 10 km deep. There was no immediate tsunami warning and the quake was unlikely to trigger one at that magnitude. The earthquake was initially reported at magnitude 6.2 and later verified at 5.9.

An earthquake with magnitude of 5.7 rocked eastern parts of Indonesia on Tuesday, with no report of damage or casualties, meteorology agency said. The quake struck at 10:20 Jakarta time (03:20GMT) with epicenter at 157 km northeast of Melongsuane town of North Sulawesi and at 107 km under sea bed, an official of the agency said.

Researchers reported Thursday that a study of reefs in Indonesia found that corals record cyclical events in the environment, and that these events could foretell a considerable earthquake in the eastern Indian Ocean within the next twenty years. Scientists at the California Institute of Technology's Tectonics Observatory studied corals off Indonesia's Sumatra island, and found them to include annual growth rings, similar to those in tree trunks, which document cyclical events such as earthquakes.

Indonesia`s exports in October 2008 dropped 11.61 percent to US$10.81 billion, according to the country`s Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS). BPS chief Rusman Heriawan said here on Monday Indonesia`s oil and gas exports dropped most drastically by 25.72 percent to US$1,808 million while non-oil and gas exports slid 8.10 percent to US$9 million from the month before.

The banknotes are officially withdrawn at the end of the year since they have been replaced by new ones in recent years. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has forced the Bakrie Group to fulfill the complete payment for damages to people who have become victims to the mud flow in eastern Java. The payment should be completed as early as Monday. This news was announced to journalists by the Minister of Public Works, Djoko Kirmanto. Djoko told that he had a private meeting with the president earlier yesterday in which Yudhoyono asked him to summon Nirwan Bakri. A leader of a Islamic boarding school (Pondok Pesantren) is accused of raping two of his students and is currently in a police cell in the district of Malang. The leader, only known as N.H., was arrested by the regional police of Malang in a rented house in Pare, in the district of Kediri. N.H. is also the leader of a boarding school in the village Kaumrejo, sub-district Ngantang in the district of Malang. There he has allegedly raped two of his students. The two girls, both 17, are from the village of Ngawensari, sub-district Ringin Anom, district Kendal in Central Java.

The 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the coastal town of Gorontalo early on Monday, and was followed by a magnitude 5.8 aftershock, destroying houses and triggering a tsunami warning. Thousands of people gathered for the funerals of three Indonesians executed on Sunday for the 2002 Bali bombings, sparking clashes between police and emotional supporters. The three men from the group Jemaah Islamiah, Imam Samudra, 38, and brothers Mukhlas, 48, and Amrozi, 46, were executed by firing squad in central Java shortly after midnight, claiming to want to die as "martyrs" and having shown no remorse for the attacks.
